Nipple Tattooing After Breast Reconstruction
Recreation of the nipple-areolar complex is the final step of the breast reconstruction process for many breast cancer patients who elect to have their breast(s) rebuilt following mastectomy. In today’s age of plastic and reconstructive surgery, there are multiple techniques available to accomplish this, including nipple tattooing. At the Personal Enhancement Center, New Jersey plastic surgeons Christopher P. Godek, MD* and Christina Pasick, MD** offer nipple tattooing by itself or in combination with surgical nipple-areolar reconstruction. Based on your unique situation, our plastic surgeon can lead you through the decision-making process so that you select the most appropriate option for your specific needs and desires.
How Is Nipple Tattooing Performed?
Intended to create the appearance of a natural nipple-areolar complex, nipple tattooing involves the medical utilization of normal tattoo ink and equipment. Taking into account the patient’s skin tone and the shade of her other nipple, our team will first mix several ink pigments to achieve as close a color match as possible. (In the event that the patient has undergone a double mastectomy and reconstruction, we will use pre-operative photos as a guide to formulate the correct ink color.) Once the ink is mixed to the proper pigment, we will carefully tattoo the skin in the targeted area until the appearance of a realistic nipple and areola is achieved.
It is important to note that multiple treatment sessions may be needed to create both the most precise color-match and longevity of results. Additionally, while nipple tattooing on its own can help restore a natural-looking nipple-areolar complex for many patients, the results may not be as realistic-appearing as those achieved via a combination of surgical nipple reconstruction and nipple tattooing.
Ultimately, whatever your preference may be, our doctor will wholeheartedly respect your decision and work closely with you to create the most natural nipple and areolar appearance possible.
