Can Blepharoplasty Improve My Vision?

Eyelid Surgery Improving Vision

You may already know that blepharoplasty – commonly referred to as eyelid surgery – can be an excellent cosmetic option for diminishing various signs of aging that can affect the upper and lower eyelids. But did you know the procedure may also be able to improve vision for certain individuals? No, not in the sense that glasses or contacts can correct someone’s eyesight, but rather in the sense that it can provide a significant improvement to one’s overall field of vision. Here’s how:

Depending on the amount present, excess upper eyelid skin can often droop low enough over the eyes to block anywhere from a moderate to large portion of a person’s vision. As a result, many men and women experiencing this concern may find it difficult to see well peripherally while driving, playing sports, or performing a wide variety of other activities. Upper blepharoplasty can often be performed to remove this redundant, sagging skin (as well as any fat), ultimately helping to correct the “hooding” effect while greatly improving one’s visual field. In addition, any lines and/or wrinkles in the upper eyelids can be smoothed during the procedure for an overall rejuvenated appearance.

If you feel that excess upper eyelid skin is limiting your field of vision, my advice is to seek the expertise of a board certified plastic surgeon who has ample experience and excellent results with blepharoplasty. After a thorough evaluation of your unique concerns and needs, he or she should be able to determine if this procedure may be the best option for you.
