Christopher P. Godek, MD, FACS highlights several factors used to help determine candidacy for facelift surgery at the Personal Enhancement Center.

Toms River, NJ — According to Dr. Christopher P. Godek, a board certified plastic surgeon in New Jersey, facelift surgery is widely considered the most comprehensive approach to reversing the visible effects of aging on the face. While the procedure has a number of variations that are employed today, he notes that the most effective facelift surgery technique generally involves the tightening of skin and underlying facial muscles, as well as the removal of excess skin, tissue, and fat. By doing so, he adds, qualified patients are often able to achieve a smoother, more refreshed and youthful appearance.

In regard to candidacy, Dr. Godek says there is not a definitive “best age to receive facelift surgery,” as all individuals develop signs of aging at different stages of life due to a variety of lifestyle and environmental factors. Instead, he explains that a better indication of whether or not the patient is an ideal candidate relates to their specific concerns. Most patients who may be qualified for facelift surgery have one or more of the following characteristics:

  • Moderate to severe lines, wrinkles, and/or skin folds
  • Sagging skin in the midface and/or lower facial region
  • Significant loss of volume in the cheeks and/or midface
  • Displaced accumulations of facial fat
  • Loose, drooping skin and/or jowls

Like most surgical procedures, some downtime can be expected after facelift surgery. As a result, Dr. Godek notes that ideal candidates must also have an ample amount of time available for recovery, which generally takes anywhere from one to two weeks. After this period, he says most normal, non-strenuous activities can often be resumed.

Ultimately, when interested in facelift surgery, Dr. Godek stresses the importance of seeking a board certified plastic surgeon who has extensive experience with the procedure. “Following a thorough examination, he or she should be able to determine if a facelift would be the most appropriate treatment option, or if a less invasive cosmetic procedure may be better suited to your unique needs and goals.”
