Am I a Candidate for Facelift Surgery?
When performed by a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon, facelift surgery can be an incredibly rewarding procedure that takes years off your facial aesthetic without significantly altering your appearance. For both women and men, this popular treatment can help minimize moderate to severe lines, wrinkles, and folds; reduce sagging skin in the midface, lower face, and neck; lift drooping jowls; eliminate excess or displaced fat; and restore lost volume in the cheeks and/or midface. In addition to having one or more of these cosmetic concerns, patients must also meet the following criteria to be considered a good candidate for facelift surgery:
- Be in relatively good health with no uncontrolled medical conditions
- Be a non-smoker (or have stopped a minimum of two weeks prior to treatment with no intention of restarting)
- Have realistic expectations for achievable outcomes
It is important to note that a facelift will not directly address aesthetic issues relating to the upper third of the face. For individuals whose concerns extend to these areas, treatments like eyelid surgery, brow lift, or even certain cosmetic injectables may be recommended in combination with facelift surgery.
If you are interested in a facelift, the best way to find out if you are a good candidate is to schedule a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon. After a physical examination and thorough discussion of your concerns, he or she should be able to tell you if facelift surgery would be the most appropriate option at this point in time.
