How Do I Choose the Right Breast Implant Type, Shape, and Size?

When considering breast augmentation, selecting the proper type, shape, and size of your breast implants is one of the most important decisions you will make. During the consultation, I aim to fully educate every individual on all options available – as well as the potential outcomes that can be attained with each choice – in order to ensure the most informed decisions are made. Not only does this help create realistic expectations for the end result, it also enables me to more effectively achieve each patient’s breast enhancement goals based on their unique needs and desires.

Regarding implant types, there are two basic options to choose from: saline and silicone. The decision between the two is based on personal preference, though the vast majority of patients select silicone gel implants as they are widely considered to both look and feel more natural. Additionally, silicone breast implants are also less likely to show signs of rippling for many individuals, particularly those who have thinner skin and/or a more slender body frame.

In terms of shape, breast implants come in several varieties, including round and anatomically-shaped variations. For patients seeking to enhance fullness in the upper portion of the breasts, round implants can often be an excellent option. For those who are interested in a more natural-looking contour and projection with less upper pole volume, anatomically-shaped implants may be the better choice.

When selecting implant size, it’s important to remember that “bigger” is not always “better.” In fact, I generally try to steer patients away from worrying too much about cup size and more towards focusing on what is best for their unique frame according several different measurements. A great resource that can also be utilized at my practice is VECTRA® 3D imaging, which enables patients to view results that can potentially be achieved with various implant sizes – and even shapes. While no technology can predict outcomes with one hundred percent accuracy, VECTRA® 3D imaging can help establish realistic expectations for the breast augmentation procedure.

In the end, every implant has its own advantages and disadvantages for each individual. After thoroughly reviewing all options available, I will make recommendations based on what I believe may be able to achieve the best, most natural-looking outcomes, but the final decision regarding breast implant type, shape, and size will be left up to the patient.
