How Will My Scar Look After Tummy Tuck Surgery?
The appearance of scarring following tummy tuck surgery (abdominoplasty) is a common concern many prospective patients have when considering this popular body sculpting procedure. Questions I hear most frequently include: How long will my scar be? Will it be noticeable when wearing underwear and/or a bikini? What can I do to reduce the appearance of my scar? While the specific answers to these questions will vary by the individual and his or her unique needs and goals, there are a few principles that often apply to abdominoplasty scarring as a whole.
In general, the length of a tummy tuck scar will depend on the amount of skin needed to be removed to achieve the desired outcome. Typically made low on the abdomen (close to the pubic region), the scar could extend from hip to hip for patients who require a more extensive excision of skin tissues, while it may be much shorter for those who don’t need as much removed. Due to its location, however, any potential scarring can often be hidden by the majority of clothing articles, bikinis, and underwear varieties.
To help minimize the appearance of abdominoplasty scarring, it is extremely important to limit any tension and/or excessive force your incision may be subjected to throughout the healing process. This includes avoiding any strenuous physical activity and heavy lifting that may put strain on your abdominal region. By resting and closely following your plastic surgeon’s postoperative instructions, your scar should heal nicely and may not be as noticeable as you might have expected.
